Caregiver Fatigue-The Basics

Let's talk about some basics here...

You may hear both terms caregiver fatigue and burnout. Both are appropriate and have similar outcomes. Don't let yourself get caught up in the verbiage... after all, you don't need any further stress

.

It is common to hear about those who suffer from chronic illness, disease and conditions. Outward support is often easier to access or ask for.

.

But what about those individuals who find themselves as caregivers to aging parents, spouse or lovers..? Why is it that we become lost in the messiness of this crap... Is it pride, denial, shame, fear that holds us back from asking for help..? What ever your reason... when we ignore the signs... our individual purpose, joy & health will suffer.

.

Because we are all unique... root causes and effects can vary amongst us as humans. I hope to shed light on this ugly,

(chapter of life which snuck in uninvited), and changed our projected happy ending.

Here is a short list of facts which contribute to caregiver burnout:

  • Minimal respite care for caregiver

  • Women are more susceptible to burnout & have higher risk of developing own conditions

  • Men are unlikely to have jobs which support caregiver duties

  • Alzheimer's & other mental health issues are more stressful than physical ailments

  • Difficulty finding balance with work and caregiver duties

  • Resentment towards loss of own personal life & purpose

  • Lack of training and support with illness and daily care

  • Guilt over emotions and thoughts
