Bye Bye New Years Resolutions – Hello Success
New Years… The time for new beginnings and chapters. This is our opportunity to set out to verbalize goals and implement change. As many aspire to create new habits, eliminate others… most will fail.
This is why I believe that creating New Years resolutions are bad. You read that right. New Years resolutions are a bunch of bunk! So why is this..?
Let me share four reasons why New Years Resolutions often work against you:
1. As humans, we crave quick results. We live in the “I want it all and I want it now”. If you have a ton of habits to break or a really big dream to accomplish…you can’t sprint there. This will likely lead to burn out. The phrase “Slow and steady works best”.
2. We get excited over quick fixes and fads… “Just take _____ everyday and ______ will happen”. Fabulous peeps… this stuff is a bunch of F--Ked up nonsense. Your value is worth more than this type of chatter.
3. New Years resolutions are absolute statements. Beginning January 1st, “I will not have _______ ever again”. “I will do ______ everyday: Talk about self induced stress. These types of goals don’t allow for tweaking or rough days. Remember, you are human, and even, the best of us are fallible.
4. You begin to put everything into reaching your goal and don’t enjoy the process. If you dread the process… if you are hyper focused… you will likely begin feeling deprived… or just beat down.
You are more than this!!! You are capable of obtaining your most wild or big dream (goal). You just need to rewire your mindset. I prefer committing to lifestyle change or creating a path to reaching that big goal. When you change your outlook… you open yourself up to success.
Here are five tips to get you going:
1. Strive for small changes. You will likely be less intimidated as you will have smaller, noticeable stages of progress sooner. This will build excitement and momentum.
2. Give yourself permission to evaluate what is and isn’t working. This allows you to tweak your plan and try something new. After all, you are striving for sustainable results.
3. Track your progress and motivation. There are so many ways to document your progress…. Watches (Fit bit, Apple), journals, video blogs, motivation books are all options. Consider starting your day with an “I can do this” statement. This will aid in creating that new and improved mindset.
4. Go get you some social support. Find a workout buddy. Discover a Facebook group with similar goals. Invest in your worth and hire a coach. There is strength in numbers!
5. Lastly and most importantly… Know your Why! You know what you want, but you haven’t stopped to reflect on the why or how life will be different. Having perspective aids in clarity. Clarity translates into creativity and excitement to work through the challenges.
2021 is the beginning of your next chapter. The date is just that… a new start time… nothing else nothing more. What is important is the forward movement you make towards living your best healthy, happy life.
