The physical effects of Sepsis

Pictures from my second hospitalization and day of bronchoscopy.

Sepsis is a life-threatening infection where the body begins having harmful reactions. This can be brought on from infections (usually respiratory or urinary), a fungus or nasty cut. Mine was developed from a pneumonia infection.

Symptoms include:

  • Fever

  • Weakness,

  • low blood pressure

  • Confusion

  • Unexplainable discomfort

  • Shortness of breath and feelings of impending doom.

I experienced all of these… and for more than a day or two….before I was admitted to the hospital.

Hospital treatment may include:

  • Round the clock IV fluids to keep blood pressure stable and protect organs

  • IV antibiotics to fight the infection quickly

  • Medications to help reduce inflammation or maintain blood pressure

  • Frequent breathing treatments

Experiencing Sepsis is No Joke! It wreaks havoc on the body and emotions. I was diagnosed during my first hospital admission in April 2025. My second admission was May 2025. Combine this with my bronchiectasis and my good health returning has been a journey. Since this began, I have developed a fungal infection called Nocardia. I already have another fungal infection (Aspergillus) which I have had for years. The long-term effects of a sepsis infection can last from months to a year. Literally, it took me about this long to start feeling better once again.

I have an group of amazing doctors that specialize in these conditions and have helped me with treatments to recover and get on with life.
